Bodhisattva Manjushri, Nepal.

  • The bodhisattva Manjushri , the oldest and most important of Mahāyāna literature, Nepal late 19th / early 20th century.
  • He is depicted brandishing a flaming sword in his right hand, indicating the realization of transcendent wisdom that eliminates ignorance and duality. His right hand is shown in vitarka mudra, the gesture of argumentation.
  • Provenance: Estate of collector and art dealer Claude de Marteau.
  • All the other Himalayan and South-East Asian art pieces to come are of the same origin, and have been stored in our reserves for over 50 years in some cases.
