Buddha Maravijaya, Mandalay.
€3500,00
- A very fine example of the Shakyamuni Buddha in carved, lacquered and gilded wood.
The folds and contours of his monastic robe are enhanced with glass beads.
The Enlightened One is seated in bhumisparsa-mudra, or “witnessing the earth”, on a double lotus base, which still has its reliquary cavity. - The expression of the eyes (made with cowrie shells) is particularly intense and realistic, almost disturbing.
The dark lacquer dominating the front of the piece contrasts with the still-preserved gilding on the back, accentuating the presence of this magnificent piece. - Burma, early Mandalay period (1853-1948).
