  • Octagonal gatham hatbox.
    It comes with a padlock, which is still functional.
  • Lacquered elm and brass, the 4 sides of the upper part indicate “Bonne Chance” (Blessing / Good omen).
  • Korea, late Joseon dynasty circa 1850/1880.
  • Hats affirmed status and power, and played a very important role in traditional Korean society.
    The gatham was used to store only the finest hats of its owners, the yangban, mainly high-ranking civil servants and military officers .
  • In perfect condition.

  • Provenance: Estate of the dealer and collector Claude de Marteau.
